Kart: international vs. national
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

When it comes to kart racing, Western Europe can be considered a spoiled child. Even though the overall number of participants is more diluted than before 2006, the disastrous year when the regrettable CIK-FIA KF categories entered the track, many races are offered in Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal... The void left by the much missed ICA and FA categories was quickly filled by the Rotax, IAME and Rok branded cups. The return of the CIK-FIA categories of the OK generation to the national championships remains a problem to be solved.

The premiere of the German DKM 2022 Championship this weekend in Kerpen confirms the trend of strong national participation. Until recently, the DKM could be considered an international series with the presence of many foreign drivers and teams. This no longer seems to be the case with more than half of the participants being German. If this development is confirmed, the DKM could become the first national multi-event championship reserved for CIK-FIA categories. The quality and the level of the DKM is not the cause of this disaffection from foreign participants. The international offer has diversified alongside the FIA Karting events with the implementation of a second European championship embodied by the Champions of the Future series, in addition to the WSK Promotion races which are confined to Italy.

It is nevertheless true that some major European karting nations such as Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Spain do not organise OK and OK-Junior competitions on their territory. Sweden is an exception as it has been awarding national OK and OK-Junior titles for several years within a championship that includes other categories. France has set up a federal formula based on the FIA Karting Academy Trophy model.

The OK and OK-Junior categories are in fact confined to the international level, and therefore to the top level, and have a reputation for high costs and technicality that is not really justified and that hinders their development in the national level, not to mention the regional level. This is the law of the market and it is a shame.
