Kart: discovering the charms of Trinec

As a preview of the FIA Karting European Championship - OK & Junior, the Champions of the Future Euro Series went to the Czech Republic last weekend to discover the Steelring International Circuit in Trinec.

The 1223 m long track could be a mix between Lonato, PFI and Cremona in the sense that it is winding with a good twenty turns. The uniqueness of Trinec concerns the hilly site on which it is located. It is land belonging to the Třinecké železllárny steelworks, which are omnipresent as a source of income and employment in the town. Martin Gregor, the head of the Steelring, had the support of the steelworks to create the track. He explains the choice of track by the contingencies of the available surface and by a desire to avoid the worries of rainwater drainage inherent in a too-flat configuration.

For comparison with the most recent competition at Lonato, the first WSK Super Master Series in February, the OK pole position was achieved by Luigi Coluccio (Tony Kart / Vortex) in 46''461 or 92.98 km/h average speed on LeCont tyres, while Champions of the Future poleman Gabriel Gomez (CRG / Iame) lapped in a time of 52''048 at 85.82 km/h average speed on MG tyres. In OK-Junior, Dries van Langendonck (Exprit / TM) was the fastest in Trinec with a time of 53''283, an average speed of 83,38 km/h, compared to his own pole position, also on Vega tyres, on an Energy / TM in Lonato with a time of 47''464 and an average speed of 91,02 km/h. The differences between these two circuits of comparable length are therefore significant.

Trinec undeniably offers a very interesting circuit, reminiscent of the original karting tracks where the difference was made in the sequence of turns without looking for high speeds in long fast sections. The Czech track highlights the talent of the drivers on several levels. The management of tyre wear, even more sensitive in OK, is one of the parameters to be taken into account, especially as the asphalt is new. Overtaking is not particularly easy, as a driver can easily close the door to resist his pursuers. However, significant recoveries were made during the whole weekend, in the dry as well as in the rain, by the most spirited drivers. For example, OK winner Joe Turney (KR / Iame) was 51st in Qualifying, while Alp Hasan Askoy (Tony Kart / Vortex) climbed from 65th to 8th in OK-Junior.

The rain in the Finals gave rise to some unexpected acrobatic tricks that could end up off the track, as well as some impressive climbs. It has to be said that the conditions have generally been dry in international competition since the beginning of the season.

The fact that Russian drivers cannot participate in this competition, or in the next European Championship, is obviously regrettable. This is a recent decision by the Czech government, which now refuses to allow Russian athletes on its territory. When the choice of Trinec was made, the situation was different and this restriction was not in place.

In conclusion, the organiser's efforts to welcome the competitors as warmly as possible and to give them a good impression of the Czech Republic should be highlighted. In order to open new horizons for racing, RGMMC does not regret coming to Trinec. The results of the event confirm the interest of this very selective choice. Finally, we would like to add that from a media point of view, coming to a Champions of the Future Euro Series event is always a pleasure.
