Kart: breathtaking world finals at PFI
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

The previous editorial ended with these words: "The forthcoming World Championship promises to be wide open. We can expect surprises and twists and turns right up to the end of the FIA Karting event. Will we see a little-known driver come out on top at the end of the competition? It remains a possibility... "It became a reality in both categories in incredible fashion with Kenzo Craigie in Junior and Ethan Jeff-Hall in OK taking power in the last lap of both Finals and their world coronation on the Paul Fletcher International Circuit.

The rain that drenched the World Championship Finals was not the only explanation for the intensity of the competition at PFI. From the start of the meeting, the races had been extremely close. On Friday evening alone, the stewards handed out more than 100 penalties even though the English track was completely dry. A wind of madness was already blowing through PFI.

The stakes were certainly high and the sheer number of participants was raising the temperature under the helmets. As we would see at the finish, drivers from all categories, not necessarily used to FIA Karting competitions, were determined to try their luck. Among them were a number of young Englishmen who knew the Lincolnshire track very well and had little to lose against the big names in international competition.

The PFI layout did the rest. After more than 40 heats and Super Heats, the rain arrived on the scene for some stunning Finals offering an extraordinary spectacle. The OK-N World Cup began with eight drivers out of 26 finishing. Noah Baglin then led from lap 2 of the OK-Junior Final. The battles raged at all levels. There were clashes between Kenzo Craigie and Kit Belofsky, Riley Crantham and Roman Kamyab, and then Schaufler who went into a 360 after contact with Belofsky but continued his race. Craigie caught up with Baglin before sliding away and finding himself more than 2 seconds behind the leader at the end of the race. Coronel took on Kamyab, and the gap between Craigie and Baglin suddenly melted away as the finish approached. The last lap was completely crazy with the 1st and 2nd placed drivers, who swapped positions several times. After several off-track passes, Craigie seemed to have won the race, but Baglin attacked him in the final pif-paf, but came back to the middle of the track and hit Craigie, whom he had passed again, and went out in the protection, with Craigie taking the win. Although the image might have left some doubt about the live-streaming, a closer look confirmed the stewards' decision not to penalise either driver, as the fault lay more with Baglin.

Barely recovered from this thrilling race, the OK Final took centre stage. The clear favourite, Joe Turney, kept all his rivals at bay, even Ethan Jeff-Hall, who had come back to within 3 tenths for a moment, was pushed back to more than 6 tenths. On the last lap, he was a little too quick on the banking and went out into the grass, which was enough for his rival to overtake him and take the coveted title. As in the Junior class, it only took a momentary lapse of concentration in the run-up to the finish to cost Baglin and Turney the title, even though they had done 99% of the work to win.

Two incredible turnarounds on the last lap of these World Championships on English soil, confirming that PFI is a special kind of terrain where anything can happen.
