Kart: racing with the stars in KZ2 Masters
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

In 2022, the FIA Karting introduced the KZ2 Masters category, which, although not officially separate, nonetheless met the growing demand from drivers aged 35 and over. Karting as a sporting discipline in its own right finally offered a solution for continuing to compete beyond the usual limit. With the exception of a few professional drivers, increasingly rare, and gentlemen drivers, karting had come to be aimed mainly at young drivers. The most talented and wealthy drivers were given the choice of continuing in single-seaters or hanging up their helmets. This initiative did not come directly from the FIA, but was launched in various countries under pressure from licence holders.

In 2022, the first FIA Karting International Super Cup - KZ2 Masters organised in Le Mans (FRA) alongside the World KZ Championship, brought together 64 drivers of 16 nationalities. It was a success that has made the event a permanent fixture and has led to the creation of a European Championship in 2024. The only difference with KZ2 is that the minimum weight is 5 kg higher, 180 compared with 175, to compensate for the passage of time, but the KZ2 Masters is not a discount category. The drivers are no less talented and their enthusiasm is a pleasure to watch. Some of the biggest names in the history of karting are here. Multiple Italian World Champion Davide Fore' is a perfect illustration, alongside two-time Italian World Champion Alessandro Manetti. This year, there were other renowned drivers such as Italians Ennio Gandolfi and Antonio Piccioni, Frenchmen Anthony Abbasse and Thomas Mich, and New Zealander Daniel Bray, whose KZ2 World Cup victory over Max Verstappen at Sarno in 2012 will live long in the memory.

Alongside these big names, a number of drivers have managed to carve out a place for themselves in KZ2 Masters. Most of them are former national champions, and this category gives them the opportunity to race at the same time as the big names of the day, and sometimes even to beat them. Thomas Letailleur (FRA) won the first Masters KZ2 International Super Cup at Le Mans, before Davide Fore' and Alessandro Manetti engaged in a sumptuous duel the following year at Wackersdorf (DEU). The 2024 European Championship pitted Fore' against Anthony Abbasse, but it was Riccardo Nalon (ITA) who took the title. Last weekend, the Champions of the Future Shifters took place in Portimao in preparation for the 2024 Masters International Super Cup. Abbasse won ahead of Andre Nicastro (BRA) and Daniel Bray, Fore' finished 4th, Manetti 12th and Ennio Gandolfi 17th.

The KZ2 Masters offers an opportunity to measure yourself against former champions, and sometimes to gain the upper hand, as well as continuing to pursue your passion. It's a category that anchors karting in the wider sporting arena while offering a first-class spectacle in the manner of a historic discipline, but just for the drivers. In short, it's a very good initiative.
