Kart: the range of competition options is diversifying
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

This weekend's fourth round of the Champions of the Future Academy Program in Dubai provides an opportunity to take a look at the different ways in which kart racing can be enjoyed. While the classic offer for the OK and OK-Junior categories involves the international FIA Karting events, the Champions of the Future Euro Series and the WSK series', other formulas exist on the Arrive and Drive side. Following in the footsteps of Birel's Easykart, the CIK-FIA's Academy Trophy has been perpetuating the principle at international level since 2010. Parolin started it off before being replaced in 2016 by OTK Kart. France followed suit with its Junior Championship in 2017, which used the same Exprit / Vortex equipment as in the CIK-FIA. Since last year, RGMMC has launched its own formula with monotype equipment, the Academy Program. Equipment is provided by Parolin / TM in Mini Gr. 3, and KR / Iame in Junior and Senior.

The concept has been extended to six events in 2024, three in Europe and three in the Middle East. The basic budget is very modest, with a minimum of €23,000 for Mini and €29,000 for OK-N Junior and OK-N Senior. This fee includes a new chassis at the start of the season, engines selected at random each time, an undercover area in the paddock, a trolley and work table, tyres and fuel, and all the logistics. Of course, travel and accommodation, the mechanic and practice sessions are not included. All things being equal, it's a lot cheaper than traditional competition. The savings are considerable.

The format is also different, with two consecutive days of Qualifying, Heats and Finals at each event. RGMMC brings its organisational know-how, its ability to communicate and partners such as Susie Wolf's F1 Academy to encourage female drivers and Gwen Lagrue's Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Junior Programme to detect new talent.

After Round 4, the provisional Mini Gr.3 standings put Bruno Priam (BEL) in the lead ahead of Albert Tamm (CHE) and Nicolo Perico (ITA), two established Mini drivers followed in the top 10 by other established talents. In the Junior class, Australian James Anagnostiadis, who made a name for himself in the PFI World Championship, took 1st place ahead of Kacper Rajpold (POL) and William Marshall (ZAF). The number of drivers from FIA Karting is much lower, and the diversity of profiles is increasing. Finally, in the Senior class, the field is much more open, with Luna Fluxa Cross (ESP) dominating ahead of Hugo Herrouin (FRA) and Philippe Karras (FRA).

What the outcome of this championship will be remains to be seen. It's a fact that Mini drivers are continuing to gather experience and prepare for their move up to Junior level. With the WSK and the Italian Championship, some of them will exceed 20 races in 2024. So there's no question of a limited budget. The role of access to competition is more sensitive in the other two categories. Some will try to continue in the FIA Karting categories, others will undoubtedly take part in the brand cups and the rest will be able to continue with a good experience in the national championships. On a positive note, it is certain that new drivers will emerge from this series and integrate with racing in general.

The formula could well be emulated just about everywhere, and why not in France with a concept bringing together several categories...
