Kart: a World Championship on British soil / what makes it so special
Reportagem: KartCom Selection

The United Kingdom is back on the international karting calendar for the first time since Brexit. The PF International circuit has just hosted the fifth round of the Champions of the Future Euro Series and is preparing to host the FIA Karting OK and Junior World Championship. What should we remember about the RGMMC competition on British soil?

The proportion of British drivers didn't increase compared with the other Champions of the Future Euro Series events, but we did feel a difference with the sudden English pressure in all the races. PFI is a very active circuit with a huge number of competitions throughout the year. It's a very popular training ground in the UK and it's only natural that the local drivers are particularly comfortable there. Four British drivers finished in the OK-Junior top five and four in the OK top eight. Suddenly there were new drivers at the top of the rankings with Scott Marsh, Kenzo Craigie, Jarrett Clark and Kit Belofsky in Junior, Freddie Lloyd, Gus Lawrence and Joseph Smith in OK, while Joe Turney won.

A classic-style circuit, lengthened in 2012, PFI includes a long 270° banked left-hand corner on the way up, a bridge where a lot happens, a double straight / hairpin sequence and a twisty final sector. With its frequent changes of pace, the layout offers plenty of opportunities for overtaking, as well as for closing the doors. All of this is conducive to close battles, which are very frequent, and encourages a very aggressive driving style, characteristic of the British-trained drivers.

Another factor to take into account is that the British weather can be very wet and tricky for those not used to it. Performance gaps are not uncommon and comebacks can be impressive. With six Qualifying Heats per driver in OK and OK-Junior, the challenge is a tough one, with little room for error. In the context of a championship like the Champions of the Future Euro Series, this cocktail adds a certain spice to the competition.

While Joe Turney took victory and the OK title, his rivals Thibaut Ramaekers and Zac Drummond failed to score any points. In OK-Junior, Dries van Langendonck was crowned without taking part as he had moved up to the next category. The runner-up Niklas Schaufler was unable to take advantage of the situation and did not score any points. Junior poleman Noah Baglin scored few points, while OK poleman Noah Monteiro scored none. The KR/Iame chassis, which were numerous on the grid, were particularly successful in OK, while a Tony Kart/Vortex won the Junior class, with an Englishman at the wheel.

The forthcoming World Championship promises to be very open. Indeed, we can expect surprises and twists right up to the end of the FIA Karting event. Will we see a little-known driver come out on top at the end of the competition? That remains a possibility...
