Kart: a string of podium finishes in WSK for Modena
Reportagem: Modena Kart

Modena Kart has confirmed its place among the most competitive teams in the OK-N Junior category. Since January, it has been racking up impressive performances in the WSK Super Master Series, the most competitive international competition at the start of the season. After the excellent results achieved by Elton Hedfors, still 2nd in the series and Federico Mirabella at the wheel of their Parolin-TM Karts, it was the turn of Luigi d'Ascoli and Ioannis Kolovos to battle it out in the leading group, with d'Ascoli finishing on the podium.

Another excellent overall result

Modena Kart Racing Team confirmed it has the ability to take all its drivers to the highest levels of international karting. From the Timed Practice sessions onwards, the six drivers entered by the Italian team in Lonato found themselves in favourable positions to qualify for the Final phase in the OK-N Junior category, which had 56 entrants. Three of them were in the top eight and more than 10 results in the top five of the heats or Super Heats were recorded. Modena Kart Racing Team had a strong moment in Super Heat B with Luigi d'Ascoli's victory ahead of Elton Hedfors and Ioannis Kolovos. A significant triple!

A look back at the drivers' performances

Luigi D'Ascoli - Luigi had returned frustrated from Viterbo, where he was the victim of an incident when the top three was within his grasp. The young Italian took his revenge in style. P1 in two heats and in the Super Heat, he started on the front row in the Final and managed to climb onto the second step of the podium after a tough battle in the leading group. Luigi was also the fastest in both Saturday and Sunday warm-ups.

Ioannis Kolovos

Improving with every race, Ioannis consistently ran close to the leaders: P3 in Qualifying, P3, P3 and P2 in the Qualifying Heats, P3 in the Super Heat and P4 in the Final (reclassified P6 after a front fairing penalty). The podium seems within reach for the Greek driver.

Radu Basescu Pricop

After setting the 4th fastest time in the final Free Practice session on Friday, the Romanian confirmed his potential with performances on a par with the best. He also set the second fastest lap in the heat that saw him climb to 6th position. Unfortunately, he had an incident that relegated him to 25th on the starting grid for the Final. This made his comeback to 16th place all the more impressive.

Elton Hedfors

Despite retiring from one heat, the fast Swede had the speed to fight his way back, as demonstrated by his fastest lap in Super Heat B when he finished P2. An unfortunate incident on the warm-up lap of the Final deprived him of valuable points in the overall standings. However, Elton remains well placed to finish as runner-up in the championship.

Danila Verba

Danila once again drove at a very high pace. He was P3 in Friday morning's Free Practice session. He also finished 4th in heat A/C with the 2nd fastest lap in the race. Often hampered in the very turbulent field in the Final, he was penalised for a bad front fairing position and fell to 20th place when he deserved better.

Atiqa Mir

The Indian driver often posted lap times very close to those of her team-mates. Unfortunately, she lost her chances of Qualifying by retiring at the start of his last race. She was determined to finish on a high note in the Super Heat, coming back from 23rd to 11th place (+12) with the 5th fastest lap in the race.

Analysis by Gabriele Finocchi, Modena Kart team principal

"It's always a big challenge to race at South Garda Karting, because all the teams know the circuit perfectly. It's almost harder to get on the podium at Lonato than at any other track. It all comes down to a multitude of details; everything has to be perfect in terms of equipment, not to mention the coaching of the drivers. Under these conditions, I am very satisfied to have celebrated Luigi d'Ascoli's podium finish and to see that the team performed very well with our other drivers, as demonstrated by Ioannis Kolovos' top six finish."

Comment from Alessandro Palloni, Modena Kart team manager

"WSK Promotion has already organised five events since the start of the season on quite different circuits and we have performed well every time. Several podium finishes rewarded our efforts, and all the development work carried out by our technical department in collaboration with MA Engines is bearing fruit. We are determined to finish the WSK Super Master Series in style at Franciacorta. Elton Hedfors and Luigi d'Ascoli have the opportunity to finish on the final podium of the series, and we will be behind them to achieve this goal together."
