Following Ioannis Kolovos's victory in the Italian Championship in July at Val Vibrata, Luigi D'Ascoli flew the flag for Modena Kart Racing Team at the very top of the standings at Franciacorta during the opening round of the WSK Final Cup. In addition to securing pole position and finishing 4th in the Final, he scored a significant number of points towards the overall standings, where he currently sits 3rd in the OK-N Junior class.

Another strong line-up of nine drivers under the team's banner

The event kicked off with Luigi D'Ascoli's sensational pole position in a field of 72 drivers. Danila Verba put in a magnificent Qualifying session to secure 5th place. The Qualifying Heats and Prefinals also proved very satisfying, with fastest laps recorded by Radu Basescu Pricop, Nikita Dzhalilov and Luigi D'Ascoli. These drivers secured numerous top-six finishes, as did Danila Verba and Ioannis Kolovos.

Fast and also capable of competing in the top five, Maxwell Macha was on course to reach the final before retiring in the Prefinals. As for Tommaso Corsi, Vladimir Skorobagach and Laurent Shahinaj, they were unfortunately hit with bad luck, but there is no doubt that this experience will make them stronger in the future.

A controlled Final for Luigi D'Ascoli

A podium contender given his competitiveness, D'Ascoli finished 2nd in the Prefinal but was drawn in an outside grid position – always a difficult one to manage at the start of the Final. He consequently lost a few places before fighting his way back up to 4th. The Italian has scored 59 points in the Championship and sits 3rd in the standings ahead of the rounds at Lonato and Viterbo in November.

Danila Verba and Ioannis Kolovos made impressive comebacks to finish 11th and 15th respectively, whilst Nikita Dzhalilov was unfortunately knocked out in the start-line collision. Radu Basescu Pricop had also made it into the top 15, before dropping back to 21st due to a spoiler penalty.

Analysis by Gabriele Finocchi, team principal of Modena Kart

"The competition was very strong at this round in Franciacorta, with many nationalities represented in this WSK Final Cup. We could see that Qualifying had a major influence on the Final result. The drivers are very close to one another and the slightest mishap becomes difficult to overcome. In this context, we must congratulate Luigi D'Ascoli, who put in a convincing, flawless performance. He has already established himself amongst the frontrunners in the Championship. We will continue to work hard to ensure that his team-mates' performances are even better at the upcoming rounds of this series."

Comment from Alessandro Palloni, team manager at Modena Kart

"Once again, our Parolin-TM Kart packages proved to be very competitive, as demonstrated by Luigi D'Ascoli's pole position and the fastest laps set by three different drivers. We also know that a lot can happen on a circuit like Franciacorta, and that's exactly what happened. In addition to Luigi D'Ascoli's performance, we could have achieved better results with fewer incidents during the race. That's all part of the game, and I'm sure we'll all come back even stronger for the next race."
